Proclamation - Autism Acceptance Month April 2025

WHEREAS, it is estimated that 1 in 66 people across the country are Autistic/have autism, and 1 in 32 people - approximately 30,000 individuals - in Nova Scotia are Autistic/have autism; and

WHEREAS, many dedicated Autistic individuals/people with autism, parents, teachers, researchers, and professionals, including those at Autism Nova Scotia and other community-based organizations, work tirelessly throughout our province to make the communities where we live accessible and inclusive for Autistics/individuals with autism, and their loved ones; and

WHEREAS, with 11 locations throughout the province and with the support of the autism community, Autism Nova Scotia builds understanding, acceptance, and inclusion for Autistics/individuals on the autism spectrum and their families through leadership, advocacy, education, training, and programming across the lifespan; and

WHEREAS, this month of April marks Autism Acceptance Month, and Tuesday, April 2nd, marked World Autism Acceptance Day, when people across the globe came together as a community to celebrate autism and promote acceptance and inclusion.

  

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT, I, Mayor Greg Henley, on behalf of the Town of Oxford Council do hereby proclaim April 2025 as Autism Acceptance Month throughout the Town of Oxford and encourage all our residents and visitors to

recognize the Autistic individuals/people with autism, family members, caregivers, educators, and other professionals who strive to make Nova Scotia an inclusive and accessible place for us all to call home.

WHEREAS, Parkinson’s is a neurological-debilitating disease that can be treated but not cured. It causes tremors in the arms, hands and legs, muscular rigidity, slowness of movement, difficulty speaking and swallowing, depression and a list of other symptoms; and

WHEREAS, Parkinson’s Awareness Month is April 2025 and brings into focus its lifechanging effects; and

WHEREAS, Parkinson’s Society Nova Scotia is a non-profit society and is comprised of a dedicated group of volunteers whose mandate is to provide education, advocacy, research and support to all Parkinson’s patients, caregivers and families.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT, I, Mayor Greg Henley, on behalf of the Town of Oxford Council, do hereby proclaim April 2025 as “Parkinson’s Awareness Month” in the Town of Oxford.

Proclamation - National Hygienists Week - April 7-11, 2025.

WHEREAS 59%   of Canadian children and 96% of adults have experienced cavities, and 21% of Canadian adults have experienced periodontal (gum) issues.

And WHEREAS research shows a direct link between oral health and overall health and well-being, such as periodontal disease being linked to several serious illnesses, including lung disease, diabetes, and heart disease.

AND WHEREAS oral health issues are easily preventable and treatable, and Canadians, especially children and seniors, can be greatly assisted through early detection and intervention.

AND WHEREAS dental hygiene is the 6th largest registered health profession in Canada, with more than 31,000 registered dental hygienists working in a variety of settings. with people of all ages. addressing issues related to oral health.

AND WHEREAS greater awareness of proper oral health practices and the need to regularly visit a dental professional is paramount to ensuring Canadians lead healthier and happier lives.

AND WHEREAS promoting the importance of the issues and celebrating the successes of the profession and contributions of dental hygienists will lead to increased public awareness.

  

Now Therefore, I Mayor Greg Henley, on behalf of the Town of Oxford Council, do hereby proclaim the week of April 7-11, 2025, as: National Dental Hygienists WeekTM

Oxford Town Council Supports Epilepsy Purple Day 2025

The Oxford Town Council at last evening's Regular Council Meeting adorned themselves with purple ribbons to support the Epilepsy Association of the Maritimes for Purple Day for Epilepsy, March 26, 2025.

After the meeting, the Council all posed for a picture to show their support.

The Oxford Town Hall will be closed today, Friday, March 21, 2025, between 12:00 and 1:00 PM for lunch due to staffing.

March 15 - Nova Scotia Burn Safe Takes Effect

Fire Restrictions and Nova Scotia Burn Safe take effect on March 15, 2025. Please check the fire restrictions online or call 1-855-564-2876 to see if burning is allowed.

Red means no open fires - Map is ALWAYS red between 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM - when wildfire risk is highest.

Daily fire restrictions are updated at 2:00 PM.

Yellow means open fires are only allowed after 7:00 PM. Fires must be completely extinguished by 8:00 AM the following day.

Green means open fires are allowed after 2:00 PM. Fires must be completely extinguished by 8:00 AM the following day.

Proclamation - Amyloidosis Awareness Month - March 2025

WHEREAS March is pdf Amyloidosis Awareness Month (66 KB) , a month dedicated to raising awareness, funding research, and supporting those living with amyloidosis and their loved ones; and

WHEREAS Amyloidosis is a group of diseases that occurs when an abnormal protein, known as amyloid, builds up in the tissues and organs of the body. Left untreated, the disease can result in organ
failure and can be fatal; and

WHEREAS Amyloidosis can mimic the signs and symptoms of more common medical conditions, and the disease can be challenging to diagnose; and

WHEREAS Amyloidosis often affects people who are older or middle aged, younger people have also been diagnosed with this disease; and

WHEREAS Some of the signs and symptoms of amyloidosis can include shortness of breath, weight loss, fatigue, swelling in the ankles and legs, numbness in the hands and feet, foamy urine, carpal tunnel syndrome, bruising around the eyes, and an enlarged tongue; and 

WHEREAS Early diagnosis can lead to better outcomes for both patients and their families; and

WHEREAS Raising awareness about all the amyloidosis diseases, including hereditary and non-hereditary forms of the disease, can contribute to the building of healthier communities across Canada.

BE IT RESOLVED, THEREFORE, that I, Greg Henley, Mayor of the Town of Oxford, proclaim March 2025 as Amyloidosis Awareness Month in the Town of Oxford.

Notice of Second Reading of the Cross Connection Control Bylaw

Notice of Second Reading of the Cross Connection Control Bylaw

TAKE NOTICE THAT Council of the Town of Oxford intends to consider the adoption (second reading) of the Cross Connection Control Bylaw at a Council Meeting to be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at 6:00 pm. The Council meeting will be held at 105 Lower Main Street, Oxford, NS. The Council Meeting will also be virtual using the Zoom platform and will be broadcast live on Facebook.

The purpose of this bylaw is to establish regulations to ensure provisions for the elimination and prevention of cross connections between potable water and any non-potable sources in the Town of Oxford.

Written submissions with any questions, concerns, or comments will be considered at the time of the reading by emailing lcloney@oxfordns.ca.

Persons wishing to make a presentation verbally may do so at the Council meeting on March 26, 2025, and must pre-register with the Chief Administrative Officer by 3:30 pm on March 21, 2025.
