SENIORS/LONG-TERM CARE--Community Grants to Help Seniors Stay Active, Healthy

Community groups can now apply for funding to support new projects that help older Nova Scotians stay active and engaged in their communities.
The Age-Friendly Communities Grant program opens for applications today, September 17.
“Seniors are vital members of their communities and important citizens of our province. They contribute so much as volunteers, leaders, mentors, caregivers and more,” said Barbara Adams, Minister of Seniors and Long-Term Care. “By supporting projects to create age-friendly communities, this program is helping older Nova Scotians age well and live healthy, active lives.”
The program supports organizations like the BOLD Living Learning Centre in Baddeck, which is using the grant it received to offer wellness, social and educational activities for seniors. The centre is also providing opportunities for seniors and youth to connect, share knowledge and enjoy activities together, including knitting, crocheting, glass painting, gardening, playing games, singing and learning computer skills.
Groups eligible to apply include not-for-profit organizations and co-operatives, municipalities, First Nations communities, universities and not-for-profit post-secondary institutions in Nova Scotia. Businesses and individuals are not eligible.

NS Heating Assistance Rebate Program Opens Oct 1, 2024

Eligible Nova Scotians can receive a $600 rebate on their home heating bills by applying to the Heating Assistance Rebate Program (HARP), opening October 1 for the 2024-25 season.
“The colder season can be an especially tough time of year for Nova Scotians who are struggling to cover their bills, and we know this year will be no different,” said Colton LeBlanc, Minister of Service Nova Scotia. “The Heating Assistance Rebate Program helps ease the costs of home heating for those who need it. It’s one of many ways we’ll be supporting Nova Scotians this season.”
Nova Scotians applying for the HARP rebate may also be eligible for the Seniors Care Grant, the Property Tax Rebate for Seniors, the long-running Your Energy Rebate Program, and the Home Energy Assistance Top-up Fund administered by the Salvation Army.
Families earning a net, or after-tax, income of up to $75,000 or single-person households earning a net income up to $55,000 are eligible to apply for a HARP rebate, whether they rent or own.
As part of the program requirements, applicants may be asked to provide a heating bill. Applicants can speed up the process by providing a heating bill when they apply.

- for the 2023-24 season, 129,250 applicants got the rebate for a total of more than $77.5 million
- households receiving support from the Department of Community Services, the Guaranteed Income Supplement or the Allowance from Service Canada also qualify for the Heating Assistance Rebate Program

- the Province also helps with the cost of home energy through the Your Energy Rebate Program, which provides Nova Scotians with more than $140 million in rebates each year, typically when they pay their heating bill
