Upper Water Street Watermain Repair - Tentative June 5

An official post will be made later this week, but confirmation has been received this morning from traffic control that they are available and that the water repairs will be tentatively scheduled for Monday June 5, 2023 on upper Water Street.
We thank you all for your patience as we get all of the necessary resources lined up for this repair.

Support for those Impacted by Wildfires - NS Burn Ban

PREMIER'S OFFICE/NATURAL RESOURCES/RENEWABLES--Support for Nova Scotians Impacted by Wildfires; Provincewide Burn Ban

Nova Scotians who have been severely impacted by recent wildfires will receive financial support from the Province.
Premier Tim Houston announced today, May 29, that the Province will provide $500 to every household required to evacuate because of recent fires in Halifax Regional Municipality and Shelburne County. The funding will be administered through the Canadian Red Cross. Further details on eligibility and how residents can register will be available Tuesday, May 30.
"Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by these fires. We know you are experiencing uncertainty and distress. We see that and want to try to ease a small portion of the financial stress," said Premier Houston. "This funding can help with urgent needs such as food and personal care items while people are displaced."
Volunteer firefighters will also receive support. The province will now pay the mileage for volunteer firefighters who need to travel to another community to fight fires, including wildfires. Volunteer fire departments can submit their invoices to the provincial Emergency Management Office (EMO).
"Our firefighters are saving lives, homes and communities. More support will make it easier for them to be the heroes they are," said Premier Houston. "Volunteer firefighters shouldn't have to pay their own mileage to go from their house to a call in another community, and when departments send trucks and gear around the province, they shouldn't have to dip into their community resources to do so. We are fixing this going forward."
The Province is also declaring a provincewide burn ban because of the seriousness of the current fires. The ban will remain in place until June 25 unless the Province determines it can be lifted sooner. Anyone who contravenes the ban can be subject to prosecution under the Forest Act.

-- the funding for households is for those who were told to evacuate by a municipality, police, fire officials or local emergency management office
-- the burn ban applies in the woods and within 305 metres (1,000 feet) of woods; it also applies to provincial parks, private campgrounds and things like backyard campfires and brush burning
-- firefighters from the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables and municipal and volunteer fire departments are managing both fires; the Department of National Defence also has firefighters in the Tantallon area
-- there are currently two Natural Resources and Renewables helicopters and one water bomber from Newfoundland and Labrador helping at each of the two fires
-- people should stay away from the fire areas; they should not use drones in these areas

Proclamation: International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia from May 17, 2023
A proclamation in support of the Town of Oxford recognizing and advocating for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia.
WHEREAS, Wednesday, May 17, 2023, is the 19th annual day against homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia. This day is recognized for creating more visibility, understanding, and eradicating hatred and violence against people of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
WHEREAS, our municipality strives to promote protection for all groups in the community and to end oppression and phobias against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people.
WHEREAS, this day is to recognize the commitment our community has made to actively promote inclusivity initiatives and anti-homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia within our municipality.
WHEREAS, today we celebrate and lift the 2SLGBTQ+ community in the Town of Oxford and maintain our ongoing commitment to fight systems of oppression that impact them.
THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Town of Oxford recognized the 19th anniversary of “International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia” Wednesday, May 17, 2023.

River Ave Leak Repair Thursday May 18, 2023

Notice from public works:
Thursday May 18, 2023, the public works team will be repairing the leak on River Avenue. Originally today was scheduled for the Water Street repair but due to a call from traffic control, they are unavailable due to staffing issues.
To repair this leak the water service will need to be shut off. Areas that will be effected are as follows:
- River Ave
- Prince William Street
- Ellis Street
- Water Street
- Jackson Street
- James Street
- Smith Street
River Ave will be closed except for local traffic. Please use caution in this area.

Community Trails member wanted - Trails Strategy Group

Are you deeply passionate about Trails in Nova Scotia? The Trails Strategy Coordinating Group (TSCG) is looking for a wise and collaborative community trails person to join the team! The TSCG is a team of 14 designates from across the sector that meet monthly and help guide the implementation of the Shared Trails Strategy (STS).
They are a collaboration of wise elders, provincial trails users, government departments, municipal staff, First Nations, and members from the community. Together, they learn from each other, discover different approaches, share resources, and build momentum around the STS.
Key priorities include crafting a trail etiquette campaign, streamlining funding processes, guiding a provincial trails impact study, and developing a central provincial trails database. We are also examining what regional trails coordination/support could look like, and how we can be more inclusive in sharing our trails for all.
Helpful Qualifications include:
● Knowledge of the trails community in Nova Scotia.
● Understanding of the Shared Trails Strategy in Nova Scotia and its strategic directions.
● A commitment of time - a couple hours per month for up to a 3 year term.
● Openness/ willingness to work in a collaborative, trust building environment.
● Experience with community trail development models and/or values.
● Experience in climate change impacts and/or health and well-being from outdoor pursuits.
