The Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia will be in Springhill on Wednesday, May 1^st to do a public education event about Understanding Dementia. Topics include: Signs and Symptoms, Risk Factors and Actions for Healthier Brains. The event will be from 2-3pm at the Springhill Fire Hall, 5 Main Street. There will also be an array of pamphlets and brochures available as someone there to help connect people to free programs with the Society.

The Town Hall office will be closed July 3, 2024, for the morning until 1:00 PM due to hydro work being done in the building which will result in the office having no power.  We anticipate being open again at 1:00 PM.

WHEREAS the Town of Oxford has adopted the principles of openness, transparency and accountability; and

WHEREAS Part XX of the Municipal Government Act gives citizens a right of access to infonnation in the custody or under the control of the Town of Oxford; and

WHEREAS access to information ensures citizens of Nova Scotia have the opportunity for meaningful participation in the democratic process; and

WHEREAS a celebration of the right of citizens to access information will facilitate informed public participation in policy fonnulation, ensure fairness in government decision-making and pennit the airing and reconciliation of divergent views; and

WHEREAS the Town of Oxford joins all other Canadian jurisdictions and democracies world-wide in acknowledging international Right to Know Week;

Free Information Session: The Legacy of Trauma

When: Thursday, December 12, 2:00 pm

Where: Oxford Seniors Club, 31 Ellis Street, Oxford, NS

Open to anyone who is interested in learning more about the symptoms, the mechanics and the potential for healing the effects of PTSD, developmental trauma and intergenerational trauma.

The effects of trauma can deeply affect not only the survivors of traumatic events and situations but also the lives of those who are close to them. But those effects also tell us the story of how the person survived and the pathway they took to remain as safe and sane as possible in adverse circumstances.

This information session is intended to explain symptoms, the logic of behaviors when someone is triggered and the method of healing that has emerged over the last fifty years of research and treatment efforts.

This discussion is based on the work of Janina Fisher who has organized the work of some of the world’s leading experts in the field including Judith Herman, Bessel van der Kolk and Pat Ogden as well as approaches such as Internal Family Systems and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, into a coherent approach to healing the legacy of trauma.

Mary Ellen Stevenson is a Psychotherapist who has been practicing since 1997 in both Toronto and Nova Scotia. She is a candidate for certification in the Treatment of Complex Trauma through PESI. She lives in Oxford and can be reached at 902-397-2717.

The Oxford Town Hall will be open late this morning starting at 11:00 AM and remaining open until 1:00 PM. Staff are having an appreciation breakfast until 11:00 AM.
